Cynthia Sumers
Cynthia Summers is an Emmy-winning Costume Designer based in Los Angeles and Vancouver. She is best known for her brilliant and unique style-eye in world-building and bringing characters to life, whether they are modern-day and fashion-driven or fantastical creatures taken from book pages. The spirit of character inspires Cynthia to create cohesive looks that resonate for each individual within their world. HBO’s adaptation of THE LAST OF US, created by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann and starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, is Cynthia’s recent hit project. She also completed work on the newly released Apple Original film SWAN SONG, with Oscar winner Mahershala Ali, Glenn Close, Naomie Harris, and Awkwafina. In 2021 she was awarded a Daytime Emmy Award in Outstanding Costume Design for her work on Netflix’s first season of THE BABY-SITTER’S CLUB. Her stand-out designs for the second and third seasons of Netflix’s Emmy-Nominated series LEMONY SNICKET’S A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS, starring Neil Patrick Harris, have won five CAFTCAD awards and were nominated for 2019 & 2020 Costume Designers Guild Awards as well as two Primetime Emmys (2018 & 2019) in Outstanding Fantasy/Sci-Fi Costumes. She was also nominated for a 2021 Costume Designer’s Guild award for Excellence in Sci-Fi/Fantasy Television for TNT’s SNOWPIERCER season 1, starring Jennifer Connelly and Daveed Diggs. Cynthia has also designed looks for NETFLIX’S cyberpunk-noir sci-fi series ALTERED CARBON starring Anthony Mackie and Simone Missick; five seasons of Bravo’s breakout hit and first scripted series GIRLFRIENDS’ GUIDE TO DIVORCE and all six groundbreaking seasons of Showtime’s Emmy-nominated series THE L WORD, for which she was the recipient of the Hollywood Style Award – Best Costumes. Cynthia is praised for the chic looks she develops for various characters. Her style choices move flawlessly from the screen to viewers’ closets as she presents versatile options, visually defining each character in a way that connects with consumers. Cynthia’s outstanding and diverse resume of 60+ credits includes FOX’s Emmy-winning series BONES, her creations on the prequel cadet academy world of Halo for Microsoft’s series adaptation of HALO 4: FORWARD UNTO DAWN as well as her film work, including BEAUTIFUL BOY, APOLLO 18, and THE SHOW starring Giancarlo Esposito, Josh Duhamel, James Franco, and Famke Janssen to name a few. Most data and links to images for the Movies section come from TheMovieDB (TMDB).
Additional data for Film Titles come from The Open Movie Database (OMDb).
At least one plug-in comes from IMDb.
Data are -- hey, it's a plural -- subject to the limitations of their sources. (For example, TMDB search results currently max out at 20.) I am limiting myself to free data sources for now. (No, a "free trial" is not free.)
While much of the above data are retrieved directly from outside APIs and other such sources, data from American Film Institute (AFI) and British Film Institute (BFI) were manually entered the old fashioned way into a MySQL database. Re BFI I took the following liberties:
Regarding profile removals and data corrections:
Filtering is applied here to film projects flagged as "adult" by TheMovieDB. Pending "popular demand" I am contemplating a login and profile system with preferences (such as whether to allow adult images to appear) and permissions (such as data entry).
Whereas the overall purpose of this website is to serve as a personal demo/portfolio/workshop of web and data skills, this Movies section is not meant to compete with or substitute for far more definitive movie websites.
Whether or not he still clings to an award which he won in 1986 as a film critic for his college's newspaper, Jeffrey Hartmann is not responsible for the texts of overviews and biographies supplied by external data sources.
