Germain McMicking

Germain McMicking has worked extensively within the commercial and entertainment industry, shooting documentaries, narrative films and television and is a much sought-after Director of Photography.  Recent credits include David Michod’s WIZARDS!; WOLF LIKE ME for Peacock and STAN; NITRAM for acclaimed director Justin Kurzel;  MORTAL KOMBATfor New Line Cinema; the 3rd series of TRUE DETECTIVE for HBO, with Germain receiving an Emmy Nomination for Outstanding Cinematography For A Limited Series Or Movie; the feature film ACUTE MISFORTUNE for director Thomas M Wright; TOP OF THE LAKE: CHINA GIRL, with writer/director Jane Campion and Ariel Kleinman; BERLIN SYNDROME for producer Aquarius Films and director Cate Shortland; THE EMPYREAN and feature documentary SILENT EYE with director Amiel Courtin-Wilson; PARTISAN with director Ariel Kleiman, winning the 2015 World Cinema Dramatic Special Jury Award for Cinematography at the Sundance Film Festival. Other projects include the epic TV series GALLIPOLI for producers Southern Star Productions, the Nine Network and director Glendyn Ivin; the feature film HOLDING THE MAN for producers Goalpost Pictures and director Neil Armfield; THE ACCIDENTAL SOLDIER with director Rachel Ward and producers Goalpost Taylor Productions, which garnered Germain a 2013 ACCTA nomination for Best Cinematography; COCKLESHELL, a segment of THE TURNING feature film for Director Tony Ayres and based on the Tim Winton novel.  Before this, Germain shot the feature film screen adaptation of Christos Tsiolkas’ award-winning novel DEAD EUROPE, directed by Tony Krawitz for Porchlight Films and See-Saw Films. This film premiered in competition at the Sydney Film Festival 2012. It was also screened at the Toronto and London Film Festivals. This was the second collaboration with director Tony Krawitz; Germain shot Tony’s award-winning feature documentary, THE TALL MAN, for Blackfella Films. The film focuses on the infamous death in custody of Cameron Doomadgee on Palm Island in 2004. Germain was nominated for an AACTA award for Best Cinematography in a Documentary in 2012.  Other credits include HAIL, directed by Amiel Courtin Wilson, with Flood Projects. HAIL is a love and vengeance story featuring a cast of brilliant non-actors. It premiered at the Adelaide Film Festival in 2011 and has screened at numerous international festivals since, including the Venice Film Festival. Germain also collaborated with Amiel on his short film CICADA and his feature documentary about Jack Charles called BASTARDY, which screened on SBS TV and was released theatrically to critical acclaim in 2009. TV credits include the second series of WILFRED for SBS TV, John Safran’s RACE RELATIONS for ABC TV, JOHN SAFRAN VERSUS GOD for ABC TV, and Eddie Martin’s LIONEL.  Information above via their homepage.

Most data and links to images for the Movies section come from TheMovieDB (TMDB).

Additional data for Film Titles come from The Open Movie Database (OMDb).

At least one plug-in comes from IMDb.

Data are -- hey, it's a plural -- subject to the limitations of their sources. (For example, TMDB search results currently max out at 20.) I am limiting myself to free data sources for now. (No, a "free trial" is not free.)

While much of the above data are retrieved directly from outside APIs and other such sources, data from American Film Institute (AFI) and British Film Institute (BFI) were manually entered the old fashioned way into a MySQL database. Re BFI I took the following liberties:

  • I added "runners up" to Top 10 lists, treating them as ties where applicable and numbering them accordingly at the bottom of each list.
  • Regarding those polls wherein "franchise" movies were submitted as one project until BFI's policy changed to regard them separately, I treated them as ties and renumbered the affected lists accordingly (e.g. the Godfather films).

Regarding profile removals and data corrections:

Filtering is applied here to film projects flagged as "adult" by TheMovieDB. Pending "popular demand" I am contemplating a login and profile system with preferences (such as whether to allow adult images to appear) and permissions (such as data entry).

Whereas the overall purpose of this website is to serve as a personal demo/portfolio/workshop of web and data skills, this Movies section is not meant to compete with or substitute for far more definitive movie websites.
