Dries Mertens (b. 1987)

Birthplace:
Leuven, Flanders, Belgium

Born:
May 6, 1987

Dries Mertens was born on May 6, 1987, in Leuven, Belgium. Showing an early interest in football, Mertens was part of the youth academies of established Belgian clubs Anderlecht and Gent, but was released from both due to being deemed physically insufficient. This proved to be a turning point in his career, leading him to decide to play football in the Netherlands.  He began his professional career in the Dutch lower leagues with AGOVV Apeldoorn, where his performances attracted attention, leading to a transfer to FC Utrecht in 2009. After two successful seasons at Utrecht, he signed for prominent Dutch club PSV Eindhoven. With PSV, the technical forward celebrated KNVB Cup and Johan Cruyff Shield (Super Cup) victories, maintaining his effective performance over two seasons there.  In the summer of 2013, Dries Mertens transferred to Italian Serie A side Napoli, marking the beginning of the most brilliant and prolonged period of his career. While initially often deployed on the wing, Mertens reached the peak of his career when manager Maurizio Sarri began utilizing him as a "false nine" in the center of the attack. Exhibiting an extraordinary goal-scoring performance in this role, the Belgian star earned the title of Napoli's all-time leading goalscorer in the club's history. During his nine seasons in Naples, Mertens won the Coppa Italia twice and the Supercoppa Italiana once, becoming affectionately known as "Ciro" by the Napoli fans and a figure synonymous with the city.  Internationally, Mertens was a key part of Belgium's "Golden Generation," representing his country in numerous World Cups and European Championships. He delivered impactful performances and scored significant goals for the national team as well.  Following his legendary career at Napoli, Dries Mertens transferred to Turkish Süper Lig club Galatasaray in the summer of 2022, where he continued his success by winning the league championship in his first season with the yellow-reds.  Dries Mertens is known as a versatile attacking player characterized by his pace, agility, superb technical skill, ability to use both feet effectively, accurate long-range shots, and expertise in free kicks. His capability to play in various positions on the field and his footballing intelligence make him a complete offensive player. He is considered among the most talented forwards produced by Napoli and Belgium.

About the Movie Section

Most data and links to images for the Movies section come from TheMovieDB (TMDB).

Additional data for Film Titles come from The Open Movie Database (OMDb).

At least one plug-in comes from IMDb.

Data are -- hey, it's a plural -- subject to the limitations of their sources. (For example, TMDB search results currently max out at 20.) I am limiting myself to free data sources for now. (No, a "free trial" is not free.)

While much of the above data are retrieved directly from outside APIs and other such sources, data from American Film Institute (AFI) and British Film Institute (BFI) were manually entered the old fashioned way into a MySQL database. Re BFI I took the following liberties:

  • I added "runners up" to Top 10 lists, treating them as ties where applicable and numbering them accordingly at the bottom of each list.
  • Regarding those polls wherein "franchise" movies were submitted as one project until BFI's policy changed to regard them separately, I treated them as ties and renumbered the affected lists accordingly (e.g. the Godfather films).

Regarding profile removals and data corrections:

  • If you would like your profile removed from this site, please contact the source of this data directly, TheMovieDB. My assumption is: once it's gone from their site, it should soon be gone from this site.
  • If you would like to correct movie data on this site, please contact the source of this data directly, TheMovieDB. My assumption is: once it's corrected on their site, it should soon be corrected on this site.
  • For additional corrections and profile removals, please e-mail The Open Movie Database (OMDb).

Filtering is applied here to film projects flagged as "adult" by TheMovieDB. Pending "popular demand" I am contemplating a login and profile system with preferences (such as whether to allow adult images to appear) and permissions (such as data entry).

Whereas the overall purpose of this website is to serve as a personal demo/portfolio/workshop of web and data skills, this Movies section is not meant to compete with or substitute for far more definitive movie websites.
