A work in constant progress (and occasional regress).

Born and raised in London, director Luke loves working in the genre space, something he began to explore while studying at Ravensbourne University. His films include the award-winning western "Fear the Unknown Men", micro sci-fi "Postponed" and surrealist drama "What We Wished We Could Be". Using short-form narrative pieces and music videos to explore storytelling and test subversive methods, Luke has the distinct ability to work within and subvert genre but also tells deep character-driven stories that really get to the heart of what is to be being human, warts and all. Luke's work has been described as "engrossing... worth your time and attention" - UK Film Review (Dropkick) , "fantastically paced and consistent... tremendous aesthetic and atmosphere throughout" - Battle Royal with Cheese (Dropkick), "brings to mind the golden days of Hollywood film" - One Film Fan (Fear the Unknown Men), "a tense and confronting watch" - Directors Notes (What We Wished We Could Be) and "reminds you why cinema is such a great medium... sticks with you days after you have watched it" - A Daily Crow (What We Wished We Could Be). He is represented by the Academy Award-winning production company Slick Films as a commercial and music promos director under their Talent roster. Luke's latest film, "What We Wished We Could Be", is a drama with a surrealist edge that delves into the complications and sacrifices faced by a couple affected by the contaminated blood scandal. The film had its world premiere at the Oscar and BAFTA-qualifying Rhode Island International Film Festival, followed by its West Coast Premiere at the equally prestigious HollyShorts Film Festival in August 2024. The film returns to the UK in November for the BAFTA and BIFA qualifying Aesthetica Short Film Festival.

Most data and links to images for the Movies section come from TheMovieDB (TMDB).
Additional data for Film Titles come from The Open Movie Database (OMDb).
At least one plug-in comes from IMDb.
Data are -- hey, it's a plural -- subject to the limitations of their sources. (For example, TMDB search results currently max out at 20.) I am limiting myself to free data sources for now. (No, a "free trial" is not free.)
While much of the above data are retrieved directly from outside APIs and other such sources, data from American Film Institute (AFI) and British Film Institute (BFI) were manually entered the old fashioned way into a MySQL database. Re BFI I took the following liberties:
Regarding profile removals and data corrections:
Filtering is applied here to film projects flagged as "adult" by TheMovieDB. Pending "popular demand" I am contemplating a login and profile system with preferences (such as whether to allow adult images to appear) and permissions (such as data entry).
Whereas the overall purpose of this website is to serve as a personal demo/portfolio/workshop of web and data skills, this Movies section is not meant to compete with or substitute for far more definitive movie websites.
Whether or not he still clings to an award which he won in 1986 as a film critic for his college's newspaper, Jeffrey Hartmann is not responsible for the texts of overviews and biographies supplied by external data sources.
