Overview from Open Movies

The movie is a bit boring in the documentary-style first part, and extremely naive throughout it, as treats the abolishing of slavery in Brazil as something related exclusively to Princess Elizabeth moral concerns and as a gift of hers. Besides that, this old short film also attributes it to a life experience when teenager, when she saw a thirsty starving slave. Indeed, Princess Elizabeth is shown almost as a pure saint or a fairy, what is reinforced by the almost magical way she is introduced to scene. Acting is not the most inspired either, varying from completely artificial to theater-style overacting. However, the film also has good qualities. Besides not forgiving slavery dark times, it shows beautiful images, very well filmed. Footage showing nature or black people are those that impressed me. My fierce critique against acting is not completely fair either, as the actress who performs, with a strong Portuguese accent, Dona Florípides da Silva, is funny and also has a few quite good quotes.
