Juan Padrón (n. Matanzas el 29 de enero de 1947) es un caricaturista, realizador de dibujos animados, ilustrador, historietista, guionista y director de cine cubano, graduado de Licenciatura en Historia del Arte en la Universidad de La Habana. Sus primeros trabajos de dibujo aparecieron en la revista Mella y más adelante en El Sable, suplemento de la revista Juventud Rebelde. Elpidio Valdés, su más famoso personaje, aparece por primera vez en la revista Pionero en 1970.  En 1974, inicia sus labores como director de dibujos animados en Instituto Cubano de Arte e Industria Cinematográfico, desde donde llevó sus personajes al cine. Realiza su primer largometraje en 1979, Elpidio Valdés (largometraje), y el segundo, Vampiros en La Habana, en 1985. Además de las películas de Elpidio Valdés, también es creador de la serie de dibujos animados “Filminuto”, que apareció por primera vez en 1980. A partir de 1986, trabajó en colaboración con Quino para crear otra serie a la que denominaron “Quinoscopio". Actualmente es miembro directivo de la UNEAC.  Entre los múltiples reconocimientos y premios que Juan Padrón ha recibido por su trabajo se encuentran la medalla Alejo Carpentier en 1988, el Premio anual de periodismo Juan Gualberto Gómez en 1989, la orden Juan Marinello en 1999, la orden Félix Varela en 2001, el Premio Nacional de Humorismo de Cuba en 2004, el Premio Nacional de Cine de Cuba en 2008, además el premio El Diablo Cojuelo y ocho Premios Coral del Festival Internacional del Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano. En diciembre de 2010 recibió la «Placa 280 Aniversario» por la Universidad de la Habana.

Data are -- hey, it's a plural -- subject to the limitations of their sources. (For example, TMDB search results currently max out at 20.) I am limiting myself to free data sources for now. (No, a "free trial" is not free.)

While much of the above data are retrieved directly from outside APIs and other such sources, data from American Film Institute (AFI) and British Film Institute (BFI) were manually entered the old fashioned way into a MySQL database. Re BFI I took the following liberties:

  • I added "runners up" to Top 10 lists, treating them as ties where applicable and numbering them accordingly at the bottom of each list.
  • Regarding those polls wherein "franchise" movies were submitted as one project until BFI's policy changed to regard them separately, I treated them as ties and renumbered the affected lists accordingly (e.g. the Godfather films).

Filtering is applied here to film projects flagged as "adult" by TheMovieDB. Pending "popular demand" I am contemplating a login and profile system with preferences (such as whether to allow adult images to appear) and permissions (such as data entry).

Whereas the overall purpose of this website is to serve as a personal demo/portfolio/workshop of web and data skills, this Movies section is not meant to compete with or substitute for far more definitive movie websites.
