Maxim Bessmertny (b. 1988)

Birthplace:
Vladivostok, Russia

Born:
December 24, 1988

Maxim Bessmertny (b. 24th December 1988, Russia) is a Macau based director, screenwriter and producer. He is a graduate of New York University’s Tisch School of The Arts with an MFA in Film Production. Maxim’s narrative short film, the noir mystery ’Tricycle Thief' was the first Macau made short film to World Premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2014. It won the 2015 Kodak Gold Award for best short film and has played at numerous festivals worldwide. He has worked with numerous clients on commercials and advertisements including Zouk Singapore, Pacha, City of Dreams and Wynn Resorts. Maxim’s latest documentary effort is entitled Douro Boys, a documentary about the leading winemakers of Portugal and their wine revolution. His first solo exhibition show was held in 2018 and showcased creative works and short films from the past decade. His short film Sampan, shot entirely on Kodak Super 16mm film, world premiered in his birth town of Vladivostok at the Pacific Meridian International Film Festival in September 2018. In 2017, Maxim was invited to take part in Years of Macau, an omnibus feature film showcasing Macau in the 20 years since its handover in 1999. The film, produced by Tracy Choi, won the Cinephilia Critics award at the 2019 International Film Festival of Macau. That same year, Maxim and his writing partner Jorge Santos won a competitive bid to produce a short feature for Macau Cultural Center’s Local Viewpower competition. Maxim’s feature film project entitled “Investigator Mendonza” was selected by the Torino Film Lab to take part in its extended and creative producing workshops and was also part of the 4th IFFAM Film Market. Maxim moved to Macau with his parents when he was 4 years old and grew up speaking Portuguese, English and his mother tongue, Russian. He grew up in a creative family - his mother is a pianist and his father is a renown artist, painter and sculptor. Having started his career as a video maker for a Hotel Casino, where he studied all of the different departments (kitchen, housekeeping, security, engineering) Maxim quickly took a loving for stories about ordinary everyday people that are somehow involved in a challenging or threatening situation. With an aesthetic that pays homage to classical cinema and some narrative originality, his films are vividly entertaining and slightly melodramatic. Over the last years his work has become more complex and challenging.

About the Movie Section

Most data and links to images for the Movies section come from TheMovieDB (TMDB).

Additional data for Film Titles come from The Open Movie Database (OMDb).

At least one plug-in comes from IMDb.

Data are -- hey, it's a plural -- subject to the limitations of their sources. (For example, TMDB search results currently max out at 20.) I am limiting myself to free data sources for now. (No, a "free trial" is not free.)

While much of the above data are retrieved directly from outside APIs and other such sources, data from American Film Institute (AFI) and British Film Institute (BFI) were manually entered the old fashioned way into a MySQL database. Re BFI I took the following liberties:

  • I added "runners up" to Top 10 lists, treating them as ties where applicable and numbering them accordingly at the bottom of each list.
  • Regarding those polls wherein "franchise" movies were submitted as one project until BFI's policy changed to regard them separately, I treated them as ties and renumbered the affected lists accordingly (e.g. the Godfather films).

Regarding profile removals and data corrections:

  • If you would like your profile removed from this site, please contact the source of this data directly, TheMovieDB. My assumption is: once it's gone from their site, it should soon be gone from this site.
  • If you would like to correct movie data on this site, please contact the source of this data directly, TheMovieDB. My assumption is: once it's corrected on their site, it should soon be corrected on this site.
  • For additional corrections and profile removals, please e-mail The Open Movie Database (OMDb).

Filtering is applied here to film projects flagged as "adult" by TheMovieDB. Pending "popular demand" I am contemplating a login and profile system with preferences (such as whether to allow adult images to appear) and permissions (such as data entry).

Whereas the overall purpose of this website is to serve as a personal demo/portfolio/workshop of web and data skills, this Movies section is not meant to compete with or substitute for far more definitive movie websites.

Whether or not he still clings to an award which he won in 1986 as a film critic for his college's newspaper, Jeffrey Hartmann is not responsible for the texts of overviews and biographies supplied by external data sources.
