Men wield picks on the roadbed, then shoulder them to step aside. A train roars past and they go back to work.It's another of the movies that W. K. L. Dickson supervised when he returned to his native Britain to set up exchanges and movie-making facilities in Europe. We don't know that he directed this short, but if not, we don't know who did. Let's say it was him.Like the other British Biographs of the period, it's well composed and shot. These movies were taken using a wider gauge and much higher frame rate than was usual in the period, resulting in a clarity that is astonishing to behold. The BFI has been restoring them to their original formats, and those which I have seen are amazing.

  • I added "runners up" to Top 10 lists, treating them as ties where applicable and numbering them accordingly at the bottom of each list.
  • Regarding those polls wherein "franchise" movies were submitted as one project until BFI's policy changed to regard them separately, I treated them as ties and renumbered the affected lists accordingly (e.g. the Godfather films).
