Part one of two.

A professor finds himself beyond busy with his work and has been neglectful of his fiance (played by Hara Setsuko). He cannot find the time to properly socialize with her or take her on a date. Consequently, the relationship becomes rocky. The professor meets a woman who has lost her baby due to an illness. He is friendly towards her, she comes to believe that he is interested in her and proposes to him. The professor's fiance simultaneously gains the interest of another man.

  • Regarding those polls wherein "franchise" movies were submitted as one project until BFI's policy changed to regard them separately, I treated them as ties and renumbered the affected lists accordingly (e.g. the Godfather films).
