Emmanuel thinks that she was being watched a mysterious stranger, but he suddenly disappears in the same way as he had appeared. While on vacation, she is pressed into service to help her friend. While traveling by train from Santa Barbara on the California coast to Aspen, she helps with the search for the kidnapped sister of the Count Eric Xavier. Neither she nor Eric are prepared for what awaits them as they travel into a concluding avalanche.
