In 1942, a young woman fends off the fears and trials of war by reading the letters her lover sends home. When the letters stop coming, she falls into a secretive affair with the village postman, but his motives are not what they seem.

Shortly before the outbreak of the 2nd World War the responsibility of caring for her younger brother Johnny fell onto the youthful shoulders of Mary. Since then, life has changed beyond recognition, now in 1942, Mary has developed into a woman that splits her time working in a factory and raising Johnny in a corner of the great English countryside. With her RAF pilot lover Arthur out fighting in his plane Mary stays as resilient as she can fending off the fears and trials of war by reading the letters Arthur sends home. Having only her friend and neighbor Alice as a shoulder to cry on and confide her worries in, Mary clutches to the hope that one day her soul mate will return. When Arthur's letters stop coming, Mary falls victim to the sorrow and pain of thinking that Arthur has died in action. Mary falls into a new secretive relationship with the village postman Frank but there remains something mysterious about him and his motives.

  • I added "runners up" to Top 10 lists, treating them as ties where applicable and numbering them accordingly at the bottom of each list.
  • Regarding those polls wherein "franchise" movies were submitted as one project until BFI's policy changed to regard them separately, I treated them as ties and renumbered the affected lists accordingly (e.g. the Godfather films).
